United Way Monterey County is a respected community organization that brings together the people and resources to create long-term solutions. Beyond its traditional fundraising role, UWMC provides valuable services to county residents.

• 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember, free and confidential number that connects callers to trained specialists who match their needs to local services. In times of earth-quake, fire, pandemic flu or other calamities, 2-1-1 provides emergency communications and relieves the burden on 9-1-1 by providing up-to-date information on road closures, emergency shelters, and more! • Earn It! Keep It! $ave It! is a free tax assistance program that provides tax preparation assistance to low wage earners and helps them apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For many eligible families, EITC can increase their annual income by as much as 15%. It also benefits the local economy by returning purchasing power to families.
• FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount program provides discounts on eight out of ten prescriptions, with an average savings of 20% off the cash price to people with limited or no prescription drug insurance coverage. UWMC distributes the cards and promotes the program locally. To get the savings, customers simply present the card at a participating pharmacy when getting a prescription filled. The program provides a direct economic benefit to individuals and families who do not have full prescription insurance coverage.
• Gifts in Kind is managed by UWMC in partnership with the Seniors Council. GIK recieves hundreds of new or gently used products from retail companies and distributes the donated items to nonprofits, schools, churches, and other charities to benefit their clients.
• The Volunteer Center matches volunteers with meaningful opportunities to serve the community. In addition, it helps organizations maximize their staff and increase their efficiency through the use of volunteers.
