Homeless Census - Salinas Deployment

Volunteer for the Homeless Census on Wednesday, January 28. Every two years local volunteers and service providers join forces to do a visual count the number of homeless in our county. Successful completion of the count is a key component to access more than $2M in yearly funding to support programs to prevent homelessness and services to help people move from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

There are many ways you can help; you'll be happy you got involved.

Community Volunteer
As a Community Volunteer, you'll get an up close and personal view of what it is to be homeless.  Volunteers receive a quick training and are partnered in teams that are then deployed throughout Monterey and San Benito counties.  Going out in the early morning hours, each team will walk or drive through their assigned neighborhoods and do a visual count of any homeless people they see.  It's an eye-opener.  Click to register.

Encampment Volunteer Team
Don't mind getting your boots dirty?  Comfortable with approaching encampments off the beaten path?  Partner with an experienced Homeless Guide to count people living in homeless encampments throughout the counties.  For more info email Katrina.

Encampment Locators
Do you know the location of a homeless encampment?  A collection of tents or makeshift shelters?  A family that is living in a backyard tent or shed?  To get the most accurate count, we'd appreciate you letting us know of any encampments of which you are aware. Click to email information you have to the Coalition of Homeless Service Providers. If you don't want to be contacted about your submission, please note that.

Why the Homeless Census Matters
The census is key to our continued efforts to end homelessness in our county.  The count will help us document the scope of homelessness in our community, provide a better understanding of who is homelessness and shed light on the causes.  Using this data, we can begin to identify strategies to reduce the number of homeless in our community.  United Way is one of many partners involved in this bi-annual count, which is spearheaded by the Coalition of Homeless Service Providers and mandated by the U. S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development.  Thank you for consideration; please share this information.
