Mission:

To engage the community and focus resources to improve lives in Monterey County.

United Way Monterey County was incorporated on June 30, 2000 as a result of a merger between United Way of the Monterey Peninsula (founded 1929) and United Way of the Salinas Valley (founded 1944).

Facts at a Glance

• The 2011-2012 kicked off on Sept. 15, 2011 and will conclude March 31, 2012.  The Campaign Goal for 2011-12 is $3.6, a stretch goal.
  
• The 2010-2011 Campaign raised $3,549,840, exceeding its goal of $3.5M.
  
• Money raised in Monterey County stays in our community. Local dollars for local solutions.
• One out of every three people in Monterey County receives direct services annually from a United Way-funded agency.
• Health and human services are the focus of funding by United Way Monterey County. Specifically, UWMC funds four Impact Priority Areas that:
  • Meet Basic Needs
  • Increase Self-sufficiency
  • Develop Successful Kids and Strong Families
  • Move People from Crisis to Stability
• Trained community volunteers review agencies annually to ensure their programs are effective and efficient and that they are fiscally responsible and viable.
• Community volunteers recommend funding amounts for agencies after careful review of their programs and audit statements. Final decisions are made by the UWMC Board of Directors.
  United Way makes it easy for donors to budget their donations over the course of the year through payroll deductions.
• UWMC is able to keep overhead costs low because community members volunteer to go out to area businesses to personally ask for donations.
• The annual fundraising campaign is conducted at local businesses, through a mail campaign to county residents and by directly contacting individuals and corporations to request support.
• Each year an independent auditor works with the Finance Committee to review UWMC finances and reports findings back to the Board of Directors.
