2-1-1 Monterey County received its 10,000th call on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The call came from a young woman in King City who needed help to come up with a rental deposit. Approximately half the calls so far have been for assistance with rent, shelter, utilities, food and supportive services. First-time users make up the majority of callers. Most learn of the service from local nonprofits and government agencies. When 2-1-1 launched on Feb. 11, 2009 it was expected that it would take one year to reach the 10,000-call milestone. Revised projections are that 12,000 calls for assistance will have been serviced when 2-1-1 reaches its one-year anniversary on Feb. 11, 2010.
