2-1-1 Monterey County handled 13,144 calls in its first year. That's 30% more than projected. Most calls have been for housing and shelter, legal services, mental health counseling, employment and food assistance. Other popular requests are for educational programs, consumer protection and animal services. 2-1-1 also provided information about H1N1 virus to 112 callers. Callers represent all areas of the county and closely mirror population density. Three out of every four callers are female and one in three calls is conducted in Spanish.
