2010-03-08 - KION Recognizes Monterey County 2-1-1

During these hard economic times, people in Monterey County are dialing 2-1-1 to get the help they need. In the past year, over 13,000 people have turned to 2-1-1, the county's information line. Director Fatima Dias said a third of people are calling for food, work, and help to pay their rent. Most of the callers are from Salinas. "One of the things we are doing is screening them to help see if they qualify for the food stamps program. California is one of the states where people under utilize their ability to get food access," said Dias. This free hotline gives information about any service in the area.
